Low Cost Business Class flights, another way of transport, but is it comfortable and worth it ?

AirAsia X is the long haul carrier from Air Asia, and they only have the Premium Business Class service onboard the A330’s.
We flew from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur with the low cost short haul carrier AirAsia onboard the A320.
A cheap flight, great service and the seats where very comfortable for a short flight.
You buy your own drinks and food, but the prices are cheaper than if you go to a bar in your town.

We stayed for a few days at the great Traders Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, my favorite hotel in Kuala Lumpur.
A great hotel with stunning views towards the Petronas Twin Towers, the world famous Skybar and really excellent guest services.

This time my wife and I had to fly from Kuala Lumpur to Sydney.

I have flown with many great Airlines in their First – and Business Class products, but what about a low cost Business flight?
What is the difference and is it worth to try this for your next flight.
What about the other option, the Quite zone onboard the AirAsiaX flights.
The Quiet zone is strategically located right behind the Business Class seats, this area (row 7-14) is with minimal noise, no disturbance and with special ambience lighting.
Would this be another option for the business traveller.

My First option was to fly the national Airline from Malaysia, Malaysia Airlines.

The cheapest Business Class return fare, leaving Kuala Lumpur to Sydney and than to Canberra was € 2.710,00 for a return flight.
Flying on a Malaysian Airlines Codeshare flight number, onboard a Qantas Aircraft.
We would depart at 21.50 and arrive at Canberra Airport at 10.30 the next day.
We would get a perfect service, free drinks and meals, great inflight entertainment and a Lie Flat Seat to have a great night sleep.
We would depart from KLIA international Airport, have access to the Business lounge and the total travel time would be 10 hours and 40 minutes till Canberra Airport.
All this service for a price of € 2.710,00 return a person, but it offers more than I want ( just a good sleep ) and the price is not cheap at all.
So I skipped this option rather fast.

AIR ASIA X FLIGHT FROM KUALA LUMPUR TO SYDNEY

The old LCCT Terminal back in 2013.

In 2009, Air Asia X started low cost flights from London and in 2011 they also started a service from Paris to Kuala Lumpur.
In 2012 these services stopped due to the high fuel prices, but they still fly from Kuala Lumpur to Asia ( AirAsia ) and also to Australia ( AirAsia X )

My Second option was a flight with AirAsia X, leaving at 23.40 from Kuala Lumpur arriving at 10.45 at Sydney International airport.
A flight from 8 hours and 5 minutes and they offer a Premium Business Class Service with a Lie Flat Seat.
For a Premium Class return flight leaving Kuala Lumpur to Sydney, the price would be € 859,00 for a return flight.
A lot cheaper than the € 2.710,00 for a flight with Malaysia Airlines, but this price was to Canberra.
The problem with early arrivals in Sydney and departures by plane to Canberra in the morning is, that most of the times the flights are been cancelled due to the fog.
It takes quite a long time to get from the International Airport to the Domestic airport and you have to be there at least 45 minutes before you flight will depart.
That is why I found a faster way to get from Sydney to Canberra and arrive in the middle of the city from Canberra.

There is a new Express Bus Service from Murrays which takes you from Sydney International Airport  to Canberra City Centre.
The best thing is that it takes only 3 hours and 15 minutes from the moment you depart Customs till you arrive in Canberra.
The bus stops direct outside the arrival terminal and leaves every hour and starts as early as 6.15 am for only $ 29,00 AUD, about € 22,00 one way.
If I would take this AirAsia X flight and the Coach services from Murrays, it would cost me € 903,00 and my total travel time would be 11 hours.
We would arrive wright where I would have to be, namely in the centre from Canberra and not at the airport.

Air Asia X flies with an Airbus 330-300 from Kuala Lumpur to Sydney.
This year the brand new KLIA 2 airport opened after years of delay.
I have to say this is much better than the old LCCT terminal at KLIA Airport.

We had two options to travel:
** Business Class with Malaysia Airlines from Kuala Lumpur to Canberra for a price of € 2.710,00 and a travel time of 10 hours and 40 minutes ( to the centre would be about 11hours and 20 minutes )
** Business Class with Low Cost Carrier AirAsia X from Kuala Lumpur to Canberra for a price of € 903,00 and a travel time of 11 hours.

It is possible to travel for 1/3 of the price Business Class to Australia, if you fly AirAsia X and the travel time is about the same.
We booked a ticket with AirAsia X, but what will we get for this price and can we have a good night sleep ?

It was time to find it out.
As the Premium Business Class was fully booked ( they only have 12 Lie Flat Seats ) we booked two seats in the Quite Zone, for our flight from Kuala Lumpur to Sydney.

On our way to the check-in desk, we saw our flight crew arrive at the airport.

The check-in service was very friendly and they even checked, if there where still some seats left in the premium cabin.
But unfortunately the Premium Cabin was full, so the first section would be flown in the Quite Zone.

We passed the security controles and went for the Plaza Premium Business Lounge.
AirAsia X does not have an own Business Lounge, but as I am a member of the Priority Pass Business Lounge club, we went to the Plaza Premium Wellness and Spa Lounge to relax
Priority Pass is the perfect solution for airlines that don’t have a own business lounge, or if you have to fly low cost between certain destinations.
Fort just a small amount a year, you can get 10 Business Lounge visites and you can invited guests for just as little as € 24,00.
Priority Pass is a must for the business traveller, especially if you have long transfer times between flights.

The lounge has all the features you normally expect, but this is a wellness Spa including a hairdresser.

It was time to get to the aircraft and board the Airbus 330 for our flight to Sydney.
The Quite Zone, just behind the Premium Cabin, has seats, just like the Economy class seats.
Very comfortable for smaller persons, but not for the European traveller.

You have to be al least 10 years old to make a booking in this section, so no crying babies here.
The leather seats where good, but for a Red Eye flight not comfortable to get a goodnight sleep.
As we left in the middle of the night, the only thing I liked to do was fall a sleep.
Lucky I managed to do so for 5 hours and we where happy to arrive in Sydney.

On our way back we had 2 confirmed Premium Business Class seats, and again the 12 seats where all booked.
Air Asia X is offering the following service for the Premium Business Class Passengers.

1 Checked Baggage included.
1 Hand luggage included.
1 Meal included.
1 Pillow and Blanket.
Priority Check-in, Boarding and Bagage delivery.
But most important our Lie Flat Seat to sleep during the flight.

The Business class seat are great, comfortable and big enough for the European Traveller.
This time we would get a great sleep for just a few euro’s.

The service provided by the Cabin Crew was really great, as you would expect from an Asian Carrier.
We took a quick meal after take-off and went for a 7 hours sleep, waking up just before the landing at Kuala Lumper KLIA2 Airport.

The cabin crew was great and gave a great service.
I saved my self over € 1800,00 during this journey.

Would I fly AirAsia X next time again, YES !!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is a perfect product for people who don’t want to pay too much for a flight and just want a goodnight sleep.
If you want to eat or drink they just pay 1 euro for a soft drink and € 1,50 for a cold beer.

Here you can see the flight filmed with a GoPro Hero Black 4
